Don Rickles was born from Jewish parents in the New York City borough. Upon graduating from high school, Don Rickles went on to serve in the Second World War by entering the U.S. Navy. But in 1946, he was honorably discharged from his post.
A couple of years after, he decided to study in the American Academy of Dramatic Arts which gave him some ticket to do bit parts on certain television shows. But because of the small roles and the few offers, Rickles got frustrated with doing TV shows and decided to try his luck with stand-up comedy. Little did he know that this would be his real ticket into the world of comedy.
His knack for responding to hecklers earned him the title of the “Insult Comedian.” He knew how to respond to hecklers so well and treat insults with much humor that audiences liked it even better than his own prepared act. Though audiences kept on saying that he seemed to be a spawn of Jack E. Leonard with the way he attacks heckler insults, Rickles denies that Leonard was in any way an influence on him.
Aside from being successful in doing stand-up comedy by doing gigs in LA nightclubs, Rickles was also a Frank Sinatra favorite. Sinatra even gave him a pet name—“bullet head.” The favor Sinatra has for Rickles gave the latter a ticket to be recognized by other Hollywood names as Sinatra encouraged fellow celebrities to see him perform.
The knack he had in doing insult comedy and poking at his audiences character to launch hours of fun gave him ticket to earn a few more names such as “The Merchant of Venom” as well as “Mr. Warmth.” Even Rickles himself admits that he metaphorically sees himself as a matador bound to face another bull of audiences.
Aside from doing stand-up comedy, Rickles also entered into the film business and made a name for himself as well. As his career continued to progress, he started to use this as ticket to enter the world of television. He began to become a regular guest at the Johnny Carson show. He also became a favorite guest at other television shows such as the Dean Meartin Show during roast specials.
Up to the 2000’s, Rickles continues to grace venues with his appearance and was still heavily booked for stand-up comedy shows. He remains heavily popular at the place he fist earned his ticket to comedy—Las Vegas.
