Hollywood Bowl Orchestra Brief Introduction
Hollywood Bowl Orchestra is managed by the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association. This symphony orchestra performs most of its performances at the Hollywood Bowl. Hollywood Bowl Orchestra is made up of between 80-100 freelance musicians in Southern California. Many of the freelance musicians playing for the orchestra are experienced performers with regular appearances with regional orchestras, movie studios and other entertainment and music related institutions.
The Hollywood Bowl Orchestra was named as the "Hollywood Bowl Symphony Orchestra", formed in 1945 under the direction of Leopold Stowski. The orchestra did some recordings under Stokowski and some other music conductors. The orchestra was to last only two music seasons after which it was disbanded. In 1990, the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association under the management of Ernest Fleischmann announced formation of another orchestra, this time named "Hollywood Bowl Orchestra". Among other things the orchestra was meant to ease the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association's responsibility of playing concerts at the Hollywood Bowl during summer weekends. Another of the announced reasons for the orchestra's formation was to reinvent the pop format and to record the reinvented pop performances. The orchestra signed a 15-cd record contract with Philips Classic. They went on to make 13 music recordings for Philips. They had one of their recordings as number one on Billboard Classical crossover chart. They have had a number of tours including tours to Brazil in November 1996 and Japan in 1997.
John Mauceri was made the leader of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra from its inception in 1990. He stepped down in 2006 after the Hollywood Bowl season of 2006. He held titles such as Conductor, then Principal Conductor and finally Director. Presently he is the Founding Director. A replacement for him is yet to be mentioned.
