Folk and standards singer and songwriter Judith Marjorie Collins is famous for the stunning purity of her soprano. Her eclectic tastes in the material that she records has included folk, pop, rock and roll, and showtunes.
Judith Collins made her public debut at age of only thirteen years old, when she performed Mozart’s Concerto for Two Pianos. However, it was the work of Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger, and the traditional compositions of the folk revival of the ‘60s that evoked Judith’s' interest and love of lyrics. A couple of years since her debut as a piano prodigy, she was playing guitar and eventually made her way to NYC, where she played in clubs until she signed a contract with Elektra Records. It became the major label, with which the singer was associated for 35 years.
For her outstanding contribution to folk music Judith Collins has received several Awards, including Grammy Award for Best Folk Performance or Folk Recording (for "Both Sides Now"), Grammy Award for Song of the Year (for "Send in the Clowns"). The singer was nominated with Jill Godmillow for an Academy Award for the documentary entitled "Antonia: A Portrait of the Woman" (the film tells about her classical piano instructor Antonia Brico).
The singer’s most recent studio and live albums include All on a Wintry Night (2000), Judy Collins Live at Wolf Trap (2000), Portrait of an American Girl (2006), and the compilations The Essential Judy Collins (2004) and Judy Collins Sings Leonard Cohen: Democracy (2004).
