Moondog Coronation Ball was as a musical concert put together by Alan Freed. Alan was a disc jockey and he wanted to organize a musical rock and roll concert for fans of rock and roll. The term “Rock and Roll” is attributed to him. It is believed that he coined the phrase from his days at WJW- radio. He was at that time with Lew Platt who was a concert promoter and his sponsor.
The Moondog Coronation Ball took place on the 21st of March, 1952. It is also acclaimed to be the very first rock and roll musical concert. The venue for the event was Cleveland Arena, located in Cleveland, Ohio.
The concert was well planned but ran into complications. There were more tickets on sale than the actual seats available in the Cleveland Arena. The main reason for this was ticket counterfeiting that led to an oversupply. The day of the concert say about 20,000 rock and roll fans trying to squeeze into an Arena that held only a little over 10,000 individuals. The organizers and authorities feared a riot and subsequent destruction of property as people continued to jostle and try to crowd in. The fire fighting authorities around had to stop the show and shut down the arena. At the end the Moondog Coronation Ball ended just after the first performance by Paul Hucklebuck Williams.
Moondog Coronation Ball is coming to town! Tickets are available through Vivid Seats for every show on the Moondog Coronation Ball concert tour. View
