The trio Peter, Paul and Mary (often abbreviated as PP&M) is a well-known musical group from the US. The band was one of the most successful folk-singing groups of the ‘60s. The band consists of Noel "Paul" Stookey, Peter Yarrow, and Mary Travers.
The band was organized and managed by Albert Grossman. He wanted to create a folk "super group" by bringing together, according to his own words, "a tall blonde, a funny guy, and a good looking guy". Grossman launched the music band in 1961. He booked the group into the The Bitter End, a coffee house and popular folk venue in NYC’s Greenwich Village.
The trio recorded their first album, Peter, Paul and Mary, a year later. The album included "500 Miles", "Lemon Tree" as well as Pete Seeger’s hit tunes "If I Had a Hammer". The latter is sometimes subtitled as "The Hammer Song", and “Where Have All the Flowers Gone&” The release was listed on the Billboard Magazine Top 10 list during ten months and in the Top 100 for over 3 years.
By 1963 the band had released 3 albums, recorded "Puff the Magic Dragon", and sang "If I Had a Hammer" during the 1963 March on Washington. The band’s biggest single hit was Bob Dylan’s hit "Blowin' in the Wind." It became an international no. one and the fastest selling single ever cut by Warner Bros. Records Company. For many years after that, the trio Peter, Paul and Mary was at the forefront of the civil rights movement promoting social justice. In December 1969, "Leaving On A Jet Plane" became the band’s only no. one hit. It was written by the then-unknown John Denver. It first appeared on the trio’s Album 1700 in 1967. "Day Is Done" became a no. 21 hit in 1969. In fact, it became the last Hot 100 hit Peter, Paul and Mary recorded.
The trio Peter, Paul and Mary broke up in 1970. Each of them decided to pursue their solo careers. However, they found little of the success they had had as a band. In 1978, the trio reunited for a concert to protest nuclear energy. Since then, they have recorded albums and toured together. Presently, they play around twenty-five shows annually. In 1999, the trio Peter, Paul and Mary was inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame.
In 2004, the group cancelled the remaining tour dates due to the fact that Travers was diagnosed with leukemia. After her recovery, the band resumed their concert tour in late 2005 with a holiday performance at Carnegie Hall.
In 2006, the band received the Sammy Cahn Lifetime Achievement Award from Songwriters Hall of Fame.
