Sharon Jones News

The History of Sharon Jones

Sharon Jones is lead singer with Sharon Jones and The Dap-Kings. She is one of the most popular American soul/funk singers. Sharon Jones was born in Augusta, Georgia on May 4th, 1956. As a child, she exhibited interest in music and imitated the songs and dances of James Brown, who shared her hometown. At a young age she began performing in church and then as a teenager, she began singing in talent shows and with local funk groups.

It was in 1996 when the Desco Records producers and Co-owners Phillip Lehman and Gabriel Roth called Jones to sing back-up for 70's soul legend Lee Fields. They were so impressed with Sharon Jones that they soon released a handful of singles in her name including Damn It's Hot, The Bump & Touch, along with her versions of funk classics Hook & Sling and I Got the Feelin' which were appreciated by people. In 2000, Lehman and Roth separated. Gabriel Roth went on to start Daptone Records with Sugarman 3 saxophonist Neal Sugarman, and they named their band as Dap Kings. Sharon Jones joined this new group.
