The Eagles came together in 1971 when members (guitarists Glenn Frey and Bernie Leadon, drummer Don Henley and bassist Randy Meisner) met while working as Linda Ronstadt band on the album "Silk Purse." Soon after their formation, the Eagles were signed by Asylum Records and released their self-titled debut album in 1972. The following year, the band began recording their second record in London, but midway through, relocated to southern California to finish the session. The result was the beginning of their trademark style of songwriting mixed with storytelling and the album "Desperado" was released.
For their next record "On the Border," the Eagles added guitarist Don Felder to the lineup. The album's single "Best of My Love" became a number one hit and the record earned them multiple Grammy nominations. In 1975 they released "One of The Nights" and soon after guitarist Bernie Leadon left the band and was replaced by Joe Walsh.
In 1976, the band releases a greatest hits compilation entitled "Eagles: Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975." The album went platinum upon its release and has gone on to sell over 24 million copies making the second best selling album ever behind Michael Jackson's "Thriller." Following that compilation, the band releases one of its most successful studio albums, "Hotel California." 1978 turned out to be a great year for the band as they also received 2 Grammy awards as "Hotel California" won Record of the Year and "New Kid in Town" won for best vocal arrangement. Yet as the band was commercially successful, relations between members were wearing thin. The following year they released "The Long Run" and toured extensively to support the album. It would prove to be their last collection of original recordings in over a decade. In 1981 they released a live record called "Eagles Live" and following its release announce that they are breaking up and won't get back together until "hell freezes over."
Well, in 1994, hell did just that, as the Eagles once again reunited for an MTV special and the live recording entitled "Hell Freezes Over" went to number one on the Billboard Charts and went on to sell over 15 million copies. Eagles tickets were the hottest ticket around at the time as their tour supporting that album turned out to break all kinds of attendance records and was extremely successful. The group is once again a working band and plan to record and tour again soon. Make sure you get your Eagles tickets soon because who knows if hell will stay frozen.
