At the end of 2004, the Fray was named the Best New Band by the readers of the Westword periodical. The Epic Records Company soon found out about the new promising group and agreed to release their first album. In 2005 the Fray were touring with Weezer, a rock band from Los Angeles, CA, and the following year the boys made their own tour playing with the singer Mat Kearney and Cary Brothers, another indie rock American singer.
