The Cubs are gaining momentum in the NL Central Division standings as May comes to a close, claiming a 5-4 win over Cincinnati on May 26 and a 7-0 win in the opening game of the Crosstown Classic against the Chicago White Sox on May 27.

Pitchers Jeff Samardzija, Travis Wood and Scott Feldman have kept games on the Cubs schedule competitive, and the return of Matt Garza to the rotation will likely give the team an extra edge, after he missed 10 months with a stress reaction in his elbow and a strained upper back. Offensively, veteran Alfonso Soriano has managed to secure a team-high .278 batting average, and 23-year-old infielder Anthony Rizzo has proven yet again he deserves a spot on the roster with his team-leading 10 home runs and 35 RBI.

The Cubs will be in for a difficult trek to start off June, playing seven straight division games at home and facing two of the three teams ahead of them including, the Pittsburgh Pirates (June 7-9) and  Cincinnati Reds (June 10-13). The Cubs will close out April with a pair of games against the visiting San Diego Padres.
