An early two run homer by Rick Ankiel wasn’t enough for the St. Louis Cardinals to beat the New York Mets on Tuesday at Busch Stadium. The Cardinals took an early 3-1 lead before starter Todd Wellemeyer began to fade, giving up three in the fifth before being pulled. Wellemeyer pitched five innings, giving up a whopping 12 hits and 6 runs following a rough June in which he posted a 6.52 ERA. The Cards would only manage one more run on a sac fly by Yadier Molina before being shut out the last three innings by the Mets relief corps.
