Crimson Tidal WavesWhen former Tide basketball player Mark Gottfried (who led the Crimson Tide to 3 Sweet Sixteen Appearance) became head coach of Alabama in 1998, the Crimson Tide’s basketball program wasn’t exactly flourishing. It would be sufficient to say that only the Alabama Crimson Tide football team received national spotlight. However, Gottfried’s efforts were immediately effective on the struggling basketball team. His first few years, he and his players posted decent near-500 record seasons. The turnaround season came in 2000-2001, when his team attained a 25-11 record, about ten more victories than the previous year. The next five years he led the team to five straight NCAA Tournament appearances, reaching the Elite Eight Stage in 2004. Since then the Crimson Tide has been fairly spectacular, and finally pulled itself out of the shadow of the football program. Though they have not yet won “the big one” they are nonetheless potential contenders every year, thanks in part to the “Mark’s Madness” organization created by the students in appreciation of Mark Gottfried. “Mark’s Madness” is a group that enlivens the Coleman Coliseum while trying to simultaneously “get into the heads” of opposing teams. This year look for the Crimson Tide to make a serious run at the title with Gottfried once more at the helm, and the assistance of both veteran players and young blood alike.
