New Teams, Same Familiar Venue Ahead for 2014 Big East Tournament
Undergoing one of the most extensive conference realignments of all, the new Big East for 2014 includes Butler, Creighton, DePaul, Georgetown, Marquette, Providence, Seton Hall, St. John's, Villanova, and Xavier. Equipped with just 10 member schools now allowed this year's edition of the conference tournament to drop down to four days instead of five, and will run from March 12-15. Despite all the changes, the Big East Tournament will once again take place at New York's famed Madison Square Garden, where it has been held since 1983. In the final year of the old conference, the Louisville Cardinals ended their time in the Big East with back-to-back tournament titles. With the exception of Marquette and DePaul, all of the current schools (Georgetown, St. John's, Seton Hall, Providence, Villanova) that also were members of the old Big East have won the tournament on at least one occasion in its history.
While some programs have had little problem adjusting to a new crop of opponents, others have experienced some growing pains along the way, though all bets are off once the Big East Tournament rolls around. As of Jan. 21, the one-loss Creighton Bluejays, Villanova Wildcats, and Xavier Musketeers lead the pack in the conference standings, though just Villanova (No. 4) is ranked in the AP Top 25.
