NCAA Big East Tournament Information

The Big East Conference was established by 7 founding Universities in 1979, namely Providence, St. John's, Georgetown, Syracuse, Seton Hall, UConn, and Boston College. The aim was to form an outstanding basketball conference. Villanova became a member in the following year, Pittsburgh two years later.

Quite soon the conference reached its initial aim. The Georgetown team, led by freshman Patrick Ewing, made it to the NCAA Championship. Two years later in 1984 the Georgetown basketball squad got the victory in Big East's first men's basketball championship defeating the team of the University of Houston.

In 1985 Villanova, St. John's, and Georgetown all reached the Final Four competition, finishing in Villanova's prominent championship game victory over the famous Hoyas. The conference's 1985 victory was nearly repeated in 1987, when the Syracuse team and the Providence team advanced to the Final Four, which was followed by the Orangemen teams loss to the Indiana University team in the tournament final match. Two years later, the Seton Hall Pirates basketball team also reached the NCAA Championship Game, however lost to the University of Michigan Wolverines.

Since the end of the 1990s, the UConn basketball team has been rather successful. The coach of the team was Jim Calhoun, and thanks to his outstanding players Donyell Marshall, Ray Allen, Clifford Robinson, Richard Rip Hamilton, Khalid El-Amin, and Emeka Okafor, the team gained around 26 victories a year in the last fifteen seasons. The squad also got the victory in the Big East regular season and tournament games several times throughout the 1990s and 2000s, and got the victory in the National Championship in 1999 and 2004. In the most recent 2006 season the Big East got a NCAA record of eight teams.
