With the Steve Spurrier experiment over and done with, the Washington
Redskins are ready to get back to playing some real football. Fans who doubt
that only need to look at some of the Redskins off season additions. The
biggest addition on the Redskins and possible the largest blockbuster deal of
the season was the trade of Champ Bailey to the Broncos for running back Clinton
Portis. Portis has rushed for over 1200 yards in each of his first three NFL
seasons and has done so efficiently, averaging over 5 yards per carry. Coach Joe
Gibbs makes his return to the NFL spotlight after more than a decade of
retirment to bring his brand of stuff-it-in-your-face football back to the grid
iron. Look for Gibbs to power the run up the gut to open up the pass for newly
acquired Quarterback Mark Brunell. With deep target Rod Gardner and possetion
receiver Laverneous Coles, Brunell hopes to return to the form that made his
Jacksonville Jaguars perennial playoff contenders in the early nineties.
The loss of Champ Bailey, possibly the best corner back in the game,
should be softened by a new defensive philosophy brought by Gibbs. He believes
that if you can stuff the running game with talented players up front, teams
will be forced into passing against aggressive defensive backs. To stuff the
run, there are few that are more adept than linebacker Lavar Arrington. Also
softening the blow of a departing Bailey is the acquisition of Shawn Springs,
second to only Bailey as far as corner back production goes. After 8 years with
the Seahawks Springs amassed 20 interceptions, despite the fact that teams opted
to throw away from his side of the field. With a defense like this, Gibbs
offense is sure to put up lots of points.
