In March 2006, the Bruins general manager Mike O'Connell was fired. The team missed the playoffs for the first time in five years finishing with 29 wins versus 37 losses and 16 overtime losses. They finished 13th in the Eastern Conference.

Two months later, the Boston Bruins hired former Ottawa assistant general manager Peter Chiarelli as the new General Manager of the team. They also fired head coach Mike Sullivan and hired Dave Lewis, former coach of the Red Wings. Marc Habscheid was named the team’s associate coach. The Boston Bruins then made headlines after they have signed free agent Zdeno Chara, who is considered one of the most coveted defensemen in the National Hockey League and a former NHL All-Star, from the Ottawa Senators. They also signed Marc Savard to a long-term deal, who had finished just 3 points short of a hundred-point season in the 2005-2006 season with the Atlanta Thrashers. Bergeron was re-signed by Boston to a several-year deal, thus keeping the talented player on the team for some years to come. The team’s goaltender Andrew Raycroft and defenseman Hal Gill joined the Toronto Maple Leafs.
