The Chicago Blackhawks finished the previous season with only 26 wins versus 43 losses and 13 overtime losses. They became fourth in their division and did not qualify for the playoffs.
In 2006, it was announced that longtime radio announcer Pat Foley, who had been the voice of the Blackhawks for 25 years, was not going to be brought back. It was a very unpopular move amongst most Chicago fans.
Despite Tallon's desperate attempts, Chicago finished fourteenth in the Western Conference after the previous season. The Blackhawks selected Jonathan Toews with the 3rd overall pick in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.
The Blackhawks acquired two backup goalies Patrick Lalime and Sebastien Caron. Later, a future franchise player in left-winger Martin Havlat and center Bryan Smolinski from the Ottawa Senators joined the team. The Blackhawks dealt Mark Bell to the Sharks, while the Ottawa Senators received defenseman Tom Preissing and center Josh Hennessy. The trades were soon followed by another major deal — winger and key Chicago player Kyle Calder, who was traded to the Flyers for defensive center Michal Handzus. That deal caused a stir in Chicago. The Chicago Blackhawks needed a proven center and acquired Handzus.
On November 26, 2006, Head Coach Trent Yawney was fired by the Blackhawks GM Dale Tallon. Assistant coach Denis Savard was appointed as head coach.
