The professional hockey team (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) Pittsburgh Penguins entered the NHL in 1967 during the expansion of the League. Penguins played their first match at the Civic Arena on October 11. Having lost their first game 2-1 to the Montreal Canadiens the team finished the season 5th in West Division. The teams first coach for the first two seasons was Red Sullivan. In 1969, he was replaced by Red Kelly. Even though the team had several good players, e.g. Ken Schinkel, Keith McCreary the team lacked talents and didnt succeed much during the first five years missing all the playoffs.
Pittsburgh Penguins finished the season of 1973-1974 last, after which Jack Riley (general manager) got fired. Jack Button a new general manager traded for Ab Demarco Jr., Steve Durbano and others and improved the teams play though the team missed the playoffs in 1974.
The next 10 years were hard for the team, especially years 1983, 1984 when Pittsburgh Penguins had the leagues worst result.
In 1984 the Penguins gained Mario Lemieux who would later become one of the best players in the National Hockey League and bought an excellent goaltender Tom Barrasso from the Buffalo Sabres. In 1990, the Pinguins drafted Jaromir Jagr, Mark Recchi arrived from the minors, Larry Murphy, Ron Francis and Ulf Samuelson were brought up to the team. Finally, as a result of these reforms, the team became one of the best in the league and defeated the Minnesota North Stars winning the Stanley Cup season 1990-1991. In the next season they confirmed the success as Stanley Cup Champions.
During the season of 1992-1993 the Penguins played better than ever before. They won a Presidents Trophy with most of all points in the regular season and 17 games one after another. However they lost the final game of the season to the New York Islanders.
The Penguins continued to play well during the 1990s. Lemieux retired in 1997 and Jagr became the teams leading scorer. In 1998 the Pittsurgh Penguins were about to go to the wall. It was Lemieux who took over the team and saved it from banckruptcy, becoming the first player-owner in the history of the NHL.
Due to financial difficulties, the Penguins lost Jagr and Kucera in 2001. This resulted in the teams missing the playoffs for the first time in 12 years in 2002.
In 2005-2006 the Penguins began to rebuild the team. They traded for a new goaltender Jocelyn Thibaut and chose Sidney Crosby from the junior league in 2005 NHL Entry Draft. The season was finished by the Penguins with the worst record after St.Louis Blues.
