The main difference between the structure of the Presidents Cup and the Ryder Cup is that the former includes six additional matches, which does not give a chance for the team to hide its weak side. All the 24 golfers have to be on the field for all three days. There is no such possibility as in the Ryder Cup competition, when three European players sit out on the bench during the sixteen four-ball and better-ball matches on the first two days. The USA team became the winner of the Ryder Cup in 1999 as it used all the twelve players on three days of the championship.

The Cup was founded and started by the PGA Tour. During the inaugural event of the Presidents Cup a former U.S. President Gerald Ford was the Honorary Chairman.
