About The Western Open
The Western Open is considered to be one of the oldest golf championships on the PGA Tour. It was first played in 1899 in Illinois. Originally, the majority of players participating in the Western Open were from the United Kingdom. The purse of the first tournament was $150 with the winner receiving $50. The Western Open didnt take place during World War I (1918) and World War II (1943 1945). After World War II the games were revived again. Until 1961 the Western open was usually held at a course in the Midwest, though occasionaly the tournament took place elsewhere. Since 1962 the Western Open had been played at different Chicago-area golf courses. The tournament was held there for 12 years.
Then the Western Open moved to Butler National Golf Club. It took place in Oak Brook, Illinois for more than 15 years. In 1987 the games name first included the name of the tournaments financial supporter. As a result the following three years the Western Open was known as the Beatrice Western Open.
In 1991 the Western Open games moved to Lemont, Illinois and were hosted by Cog Hill Golf and Country Club. That time the tournament was known as the Centel Western Open. The games had also such names as the Sprint Western Open, the Motorola Western Open, the Advil Western Open, the 100th Western Open presented by Golf Digest.
The last three years the Western Open was supported by the Cialis brand of Eli Lilly Company, and consequently was known as the Cialis Western Open. In 2006 the tournament winner was Trevor John Immelman from South Africa. It was his first winning championship on the PGA tournament that year.
The tournament is usually held in June or at the beginning of July. Though it will be held the weekend to follow Labor Day next year. So it will become the last playoff game of the FedEx Cup, after which the PGA Tour championship will take place. It will be held at the various sites of the Upper Midwest.
