Altar Boyz Background Information

Altar Boyz had its opening debut in 2004 at the New York Musical Theatre Festival but due to the nature of the festival only a small number of performances were allowed. The show re-opened Off Broadway in 2005 on Stage 4 of New World Stages and as of March 2008, the show continues there with only a few minor changes in cast members. The production has toured all over the world in places such as Chicago, Korea, Canada, Finland, and Australia.
The musical is presented as a concert during Altar Boyz’ last concert on their “Raise the Praise” tour. Not only do Matthew, Mark, Luke, Juan and Abraham sing and dance in the well known boy band style, but they repeatedly turn to the “Soul Sensor DX-12” a machine that tells them the number of burdened souls in the room. They aim to reduce that number to zero by the end of their concert. What ensues is a hilarious satire of pop America.
