Hairspray Background Information

Based on the 1988 film by John Waters, Hairspray the musical was written by Marc Shaiman. Mark O’Donnell and Thomas Meehan wrote the book for the musical. Rob Marshall, Jack O’Brien, and Jerry Mitchell contributed to directing the show. Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman wrote the lyrics. The songs are rooted in the 1960’s dance genre combined with rhythm and blues. Hairspray is not only a fun story about a young girls dream, but it’s a social commentary on the injustices of racial discrimination in 1960’s.
The musical opened on Broadway and won eight Tony Awards including Best Musical in 2002. The show has done over 2, 3000 performances across the United States and Europe. In 2007, it was adapted for a musical film starring a cross-dressing John Travolta (to maintain the tradition of casting a male as Tracy’s mother).
