Caroline, or Change tells us a story about Caroline Thibodeaux (the title character) who is a black maid in the house of a Jewish family. The story happens in Lake Charles (Louisiana in 1963) during the American civil rights movement. During the events of the musical John Kennedy was assassinated which also influenced the flow of the story. The country was shaked by the Civil Rights Movement. One of the musicals main themes is segregation.
The story is not at all a happy end story. On the contrary, it is filled with sadness, racial and social problems, and misunderstandings. The world around the characters is packed with sorrow and tragic events and probably thats why they resist so much to all the changes that happen around.
The leading actress is Tonya Pinkins (Caroline). Among other quite famous actors are Anika Noni Rose (Emmie Thibodeaux), Harrison Chad (Noah Gellman), and Chandra Wilson (Dotty Moffett).
The musical got only one award (though it never stopped the fans from buying tickets!) but was nominated 6 times: for Best Musical, Best Book (Tony Kushner), Best Direction (George C. Wolfe), Best Featured Actress (Anika Noni Rose), Best Actress (Tonya Pinkins), Best Score (Jeanine Tesori).
Many critics admit that this musical is a very thrilling and a lyrical one, a masterpiece and a rare pearl. It shows us the whole picture of the American life of the 1960s and helps us better understand what it was like to live in America at that time especially if you were black. Segregation was everywhere, in every city and every state.
Mark Swed, in Los Angeles times, said that it was a big ticket musical. And it couldnt be otherwise. The acting is perfect, the decorations are innovation, the singing is splendid. All the actors performed uncommonly well both vocally and dramatically. And no doubt they are worth seeing and listening to.
