Things You Didn't Know About GreaseThe show started in 1971 as a play at the Kingston Mines Theater in Chicago. Producers Ken Waissman and Maxine Fox decided to turn the play into a full out musical off-Broadway. In 1972, Grease opened at the Eden Theatre in New York. Due to excellent reviews and booming sales at the box office, it was moved to Broadway. Directed by Tom Moore, the musical remained on Broadway for seven years at the Royale Theatre before moving in to the Majestic Theatre to make the performance count 3, 388. In 1973, the London run opened in the New London Theatre including in its cast Richard Gere as Danny. The show had a revival in 1979 and a six-year revival starting in 1993. David Gilmore directed the London production. In the United States, the show also had a revival in 1994 including in its cast Brooke Shields and Rosie O’Donnell. A second revival directed by Kathleen Marshall started in 2007 with Max Crumm and Laura Osnes (selected by America on the NBC reality show Grease: You’re the One that I Want!) playing Danny and Sandy. An Asian tour has also begun with shows in Singapore, Seoul, Bangkok, Manila, Taipei, Hong Kong, and Dubai amongst others. |
