In the Heights started its performances at Wesleyan University until it received a spot at the off-Broadway 37 Arts Theater where it opened in 2007. Rent and Avenue Q producers, Jill Furman, Kevin McCollum and Jeffrey Seller produced the show. The direction was left up to Thomas Kail and the choreography was created by Andy Blankenbuehler to go along with the music that was directed by Alex Lacamoire. Lin-Manuel Miranda composed the music and lyrics while Quiara Alegria Hudes wrote the book for the musical. While off-Broadway, the show was nominated for nine Drama Desk Awards, winning two of them. The off-Broadway production closed in 2007 after five months. In 2008, the Broadway production opened at the Richard Rodgers Theatre with the same producers and cast. Due to its modern score, lively cast and set, In the Heights was nominated for thirteen Tony Awards winning four: Best Musical, Best Original Score, Best Choreography, and Best Orchestration.
