Stars on Ice is a marvelous figure skating show touring held mainly in the United States and Canada. Originally, the IMG (the International Management Group, a talent agency and a leading production company) decided to produce a vehicle for Scott Hamilton, its client, who had recently finished his work with Ice Capades, another traveling theatrical show. Scott Hamilton is one of the most famous American figure skaters. Being an Olympic gold medalist (1984, Sarajevo), he is well-known for his professional and very original skating. The skating show appeared in 1986 and became very popular right away. Rosalynn Sumners, Kristi Yamaguchi, Kurt Browning, and Brian Orser are long-time participants of Stars on Ice. Conceived as an adult skating show, it did not involve any Smurfs or any cartoon characters, which were typical guests of other commercial skating performances at that time. Another idea was to get a small number of only elite skaters, who occasionally had to perform in duets, though solo numbers were most typical. In 1991 the Canadian show was launched, which is called Canadian Stars on Ice.
Stars on Ice started on a small budget; there were only a few shows in a month, held in small towns. The first shows cast included many famous American figure skates, like Dorothy Hamill, Rosalynn Sumners, Christ Harrison, Toller Cranston, Bill Fauver, Lea Ann Miller, Brian Pockar, Lisa Carey, and the current Stars on Ice producer Scott Hamilton. Six years after the first Stars on Ice performance, the IMG together with the promoter Bill Graham launched the so-called rival of the show, which was called Skating. As a result, the skating resources of the two tours were united. Several performers from Skating started working in Stars on Ice show. For instance, Sandra Bezic became the choreographer and the director of Stars on Ice for a couple of years, and recently, Christopher Dean took over her responsibilities.
Stars on Ice show tour is held not only in the United States and Canada.
