Mel Brooks is back again writing the music, lyrics, and story of Young Frankenstein along with Thomas Meehan. The story is based on the 1974 movie, Young Frankenstein, which was also written by Brooks and Gene Wilder. The movie and musical parody not only the classic novel by Mary Shelly, but the 1931 movie Frankenstein and its sequel in 1939, Son of Frankenstein.
The musical opened in 2007 on Broadway.
The plot of the musical is taken mainly from the movie. Frederick Frankenstein is a respected New York brain surgeon who’s got a little problem – he is the grandson of mad scientist Dr. Victor von Frankenstein. When he inherits a castle in Transylvania from his now dead grandfather, Frederick travels to see the fortune. When he arrives he meets the hunchback Igor, who just happens to be the grandson of Victor's henchman. With the help of a lab assistant named Inga and the repulsive housekeeper, Frau Blucher, Frederick “joins the family business” and starts creating a monster. Unfortunately, history repeats it self. Frederick sends Igor to fetch the brain of a genius saint man, but the unlucky henchman drops it on the way back...
