The life of Key Arena began in 1962, under the name Washington State Pavilion and was used for the Century 21 Exposition. Following the close of the Exposition, the building was renamed (Washington State Coliseum, later Seattle Center Coliseum) and remodeled to accommodate the Supersonics in their inaugural 1966 season. Years of wear and tear, however, fell heavily on the Arena and on January 5, 1986, Key Arena became the first and only NBA venue to have to forfeit a game on account of rain. The roofing of the structure was so damaged that puddles formed on the court and the referees had to call the game. Though this should have been the instant catalyst for renovation, it took 8 years until the remodeling process began. After naming rights were purchased by KeyCorp, Key Arena opened for the first time on November 4, 1995 in a Supersonics vs. Lakers basketball game.
