Dispatch Background Information
American indie/roots folk band Dispatch was formed in 1996. They are known as a difficult group to place a label on, as the musicians incorporate various styles into their music, which include reggae, folk, ska, rap, and rock. The band consists of Pete Heimbold (on vocals, bass, and guitar), Brad Corrigan (on vocals, drums, guitar, and percussion), and Chad Urmston (on vocals, bass, guitar, and percussion).
The group gained recognition outside of New England. This happened without any help from a label, and only thanks to peer-to-peer file sharing programs like LimeWire and Napster.
more The band has released four studio albums, three live albums, and a compilation album The Relief Project: Vol. I by Various Artists (as part of The Relief Project). During concerts, Dispatch was known to improvise upon their album records, which often resulted in a song running twice the length of its original version.
In late 2002, the band announced their break-up and scheduled one final concert. The free performance was played w at the Hatch Shell in Boston in 2004. It was reported that the band’s fans flocked from Portugal, Italy, South Africa, Australia, and many other countries. Their concert was recorded and released as a 3-disc set (two CDs and a DVD), titled All Points Bulletin.
In 2005, the band released a documentary titled The Last Dispatch. It chronicles the group’s final twelve days together as a band. All 3 members of Dispatch are presently still in the music industry. Chad Urmston is now the front man of the band State Radio. Brad Corrigan and Pete Heimbold are successfully pursuing their solo music careers.
On December 22, 2005, Brad Corrigan helped to organize a benefit show, known as The Relief Project, at Irving Plaza in NYC. Along with many other artists, Brad invited Pete Heimbold and State Radio to play. They reunited very briefly, playing “Here We Go” as an encore. Brad Corrigan said there that he was planning further Relief Project shows featuring all three.
In January 2007, Dispatch announced a benefit concert titled “Dispatch: Zimbabwe”. It will reunite the group on July 14th, 2007 at Madison Square Garden. All money that will be raised from the concert ticket sales will go directly to charities that are fighting famine, disease, and social injustice in a poor African country Zimbabwe. A portion of the money raised will be also allocated to local charities that the group supports in the US. On January 10, during the first thirty minutes of the exclusive presale that was available only to the band’s MySpace friends, it was announced that the concert was “officially sold out.” The band quickly scheduled another performance for Friday, July 13th, 2007, and later another one, for Saturday July 15th, 2007.
