Dolly Parton Brief History

Her initial success came as a songwriter. She wrote hits for Hank Williams, Jr. and Skeeter Davis. Later, Dolly signed with Monument Records, where she was initially pitched as a bubblegum pop singer. Then, she earned only one chart single, titled "Happy, Happy Birthday Baby." However, it did not crack the Billboard Top 100.

In 1967, Dolly joined the weekly syndicated country music television program hosted by Porter Wagoner. She replaced Norma Jean. Dolly also signed with RCA Victor, where she remained for the following twenty years. Wagoner and Dolly began a hugely successful career as a vocal duet in addition to their solo work. Their first single together, titled "The Last Thing on My Mind," reached the Top 10 on the American country charts at the end of 1967.

Dolly is a very successful songwriter as well. She began with writing country songs with strong elements of folk music based upon her upbringing in mountain surroundings. Her hits "Coat of Many Colors" and "Jolene" became classics in the field. As a composer, Dolly is regarded as one of the most gifted storytellers. Many of her narrative hits are based on persons and events from her childhood. Dolly has published almost six hundred songs with BMI and has earned twenty-four BMI awards for her material.

Dolly Parton stayed with the Wagoner show and proceeded with recording duets with him for 7 years. Then she decided to make a break and to become a solo artist. In 1974, Parton’s hit "I Will Always Love You" was released and went to no. one on the country charts.

In 2004, Parton returned to mid-sized stadium venues in almost forty cities across the United States and Canada with her "Hello I'm Dolly" tour. It was a more elaborate stage performance than several years earlier. With over 140 thousand tickets sold, the tour became the tenth-biggest country tour of the year. It grossed more than six million dollars. At the end of 2005, Dolly completed a 40-city tour together with "The Vintage Tour" promoting her new release, entitled Those Were The Days. Her 2007 tour was her first world tour in many years.
