Gary Allan was born on December 5, 1967 as Gary Allan Herzberg. He grew up in La Mirada, California with his parents Harley and Mary Herzberg. His mother made sure that the family guitars were placed in visible locations inside the house so that the family doesn’t loose their interest in music. At the age of thirteen, Allan started performing in honky tonks along with his father. When he was fifteen, Allan was offered his first contract, which he rejected. His father felt that Allan hadn’t yet developed his own style.
And moreover his parents wanted him to finish school. Allan used to play at bars all night and sleep at school the next day.
He formed a band called Honky Tonk Wranglers with whom he continued playing in honky tonks. In 1993 he met Producer/Songwriter Bryon Hill who was very impressed with his performance. Bryon started sending songs to Allan to perform.
Allan didn’t have much funding so he took up a job of selling cars. It was at this time that he accidentally left his demo tape in the car that a wealthy couple had purchased. When they realized that he was the singer, they wrote him a check of $12,000 so that he can pursue his dream. With this funding he was able to record many songs for the demo tape. Many labels such as RCA, Mercury, and Decca started calling on him. He was finally signed on to Decca.
Allan has released seven albums to date. His albums include “Used Heart for Sale”, “It Would Be You”, “Smoke Rings in the Dark”, “Alright Guy”, “See If I Care”, “Tough All Over”, “Greatest Hits” and “Living Hard”.
