Indigo Girls are a folk rock duo that consists of Amy Ray and Emily Saliers. The girls got their start in the city of Atlanta as a regular act at one of the local pubs, The Little 5 Points Pub. They were tangentially part of the Athens, Georgia college rock music scene, which included Pylon, R.E.M., the Georgia Satellites, The B-52's, and Love Tractor.
In 1985, Indigo Girls released a seven-inch single called "Crazy Game". That same year, the band released a 6-track self-titled EP and two years later, they at last put out their first album, entitled Strange Fire. It was recorded at John Keane Studio in Athens, Georgia. With that album, Indigo Girls secured the services of Russell Carter, who is still their manager. The girls had first approached him, when their album was released. He told them that their compositions were "immature" and that they were not likely to get any record deal. However, Strange Fire made him change his mind.
The huge success of such performers as Tracy Chapman, 10,000 Maniacs, and Suzanne Vega made Epic Records to look for other female singers and songwriters. The company signed Indigo Girls in 1988. The band’s first major-label release was self-titled. It charted at no. 22 on the album chart and included a new version of the song "Land of Canaan". In 1990, the duo won the Grammy Award in the category Best Contemporary Folk Recording. The girls were also nominated for Best New Artist.
The band’s second album, entitled Nomads Indians Saints, became gold in late 1991. The release contained the hit Hammer and a Nail, a no. 12 modern rock track. However, it was not as successful as their first one, which was certified platinum. Soon the next release followed, the live Back on the Bus, Y'all.
The album Rites of Passage became a huge success. It featured "Galileo", the band’s first Top Ten rock track (no. 10). It was soon followed by Swamp
Ophelia that went platinum in the fall of 1996, and charted at no. 9 on the Billboard 200 album chart.
In 1995, the band released a live 1200 Curfews. The duo performed together with Ferron on the track Stand Up on her album Phantom Center. Emily appeared on Ferron's release Still Riot. Shaming of the Sun was released in 1997 and was followed by Come On Now Social two years later. In 2000, the Indigo Girls released Retrospective. It is a compilation album with 2 new tracks. In 2002, the band released Become You, which is a full album of new compositions that gained much critical acclaim. The group’s last Epic studio album is entitled All That We Let In. It was released in 2004 with an accompanying tour. 2005 saw the release of Rarities. The Indigo Girls’ most recent album titled Despite Our Differences was released in 2006.
