Twins News

Bullpen Shines in Twin Cities

While superstars Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau—both of whom have American League MVPs to their names— are the main attractions in Minnesota, those who have purchased Twins tickets in 2013 have also been fortunate enough to watch one of the best young bullpens in Major League Baseball. The Twins relievers rank third in the majors this year with a spectacular 2.84 ERA through June 17. Among AL relievers with at least 30 innings pitched, rookie right-hander Ryan Pressly ranks third with an incredible ERA of just 1.20. Closer Glen Perkins has closed out 16 games in 18 tries while averaging an impressive 12.62 strikeouts per nine innings, good for seventh in the American League.

New additions to the rotation have also bolstered the starting unit, including P.J. Walters and Samuel Deduno, who were both added to the rotation in late May and have combined to surrender only nine runs in their past six outings, spanning 36.2 innings. If role players can step up to complement the excellent efforts put forth by Mauer (.321 batting average, .474 slugging percentage) and Morneau (.288 average, 38 RBI), the Twins could find themselves with a chance to contend in the AL Central in the second half of the season.

Twins Seeking Improvement in June

The anticipation of a rebuilding year yielded plenty of promise, but tough May opponents have gotten the best of the Minnesota Twins through nearly two months of play in 2013. The Twins’ schedule this past month has been filled to the brim with division leaders from both the AL and NL, including the Detroit Tigers, Boston Red Sox, and Atlanta Braves, but fans can look forward to a considerably lighter itinerary for June’s matchups. Twins tickets are in stock now for upcoming Target Field clashes with the Seattle Mariners (May 31-June 2), Philadelphia Phillies (June 11-13), and Detroit Tigers (June 14-16).

Notable Twins players Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau have continued to set the standard for the franchise year after year, and 2013 has been no different. As of May 29, Mauer leads the team with a .330 batting average, alongside 62 hits, four home runs and 16 RBI, while Morneau has added 34 RBI of his own and is hitting .293 with 56 hits. Starting pitcher Kevin Correia has amassed five wins in 10 starts and a 3.96 ERA for the Twins, while relief pitcher Glen Perkins has been on hand for 10 saves and a team-high 29 strikeouts in 18.2 innings of work.

Mauer Hoping to Play Catcher More for 2013 Twins

At the ripe age of 29, Minnesota Twins’ perennial All-Star Joe Mauer has claimed an American League MVP Award, three batting titles, three Gold Gloves, and three Silver Slugger Awards. But in 2011, he caught the injury bug and only played 82 games. In order to save his body, the Twins decided to have him split time at catcher and first base in 2012, but after making the All-Star team once again, Mauer has announced that he’s going to revert back to his natural spot behind the plate. Though Mauer bounced back statistically in 2012 (.319 BA), he only played 74 games at catcher, and DH’ed 42 games. This year, he is said to be fully healthy, so the team announced that he should be behind the plate somewhere around 120 games. The catcher position is undoubtedly where Maurer is most comfortable, so that should mean good things for the Twins going forward.

The 2013 Twins schedule has the team playing opening day at home against the Detroit Tigers on April 1st at 3:20 p.m. In the opening month, there will be plenty of chances for the fans to catch Mauer and the Twins at Target Field, as they’re set to invite the New York Mets, Los Angeles Angels, Miami Marlins, and Texas Rangers to town. Also during the month, the team will travel to play the Baltimore Orioles, Kansas City Royals, Chicago White Sox, and the Tigers. Now is the time to claim your 2013 Minnesota Twins tickets to get in the stands and feel the energy of springtime baseball live.
