At the end of 2006 season, the Minnesota Twins were ready to lead the division. All they had to do was to tie the Detroit Tigers for the lead in the season’s 159th game. The Twins needed only one Tigers’ loss, and thus Minnesota was to take sole possession of 1st place and win the division outright. However, on the last day of the season, the Tigers lost their 3rd consecutive game at home to the last place Kansas City Royals. This was the first time in the major league history, when a team won a division or league outright on the last day of the season without even having possession of 1st place earlier. The magical season for the Minnesota Twins came to a sudden end, as they were swept 4-0 in the championship series of the division.
To improve the results of the previous season, the Minnesota Twins started the new 2007 season with new contracts. Pitchers Sidney Ponson and Brad Voyles were signed to Minor League deals and were invited to Minnesota spring training.
The team and its 6 arbitration-eligible players and the first-time eligibles Justin Morneau and Joe Mauer submitted contract figures on January 16, 2007. It turned out, that in at least half of all cases the gap equaled at least one million dollars.
The team is currently managed by Ron Gardenhire; Rick Anderson is pitching coach, Steve Liddle is bench coach, Scott Ullger is third base coach, and Jerry White is first base coach.
Starting from the 2007 season the games of the Minnesota Twins will be broadcasted by KSTP radio station that will replace WCCO station, which had broadcast rights for at least forty-five seasons.
