Mets News

Wheeler Wows in Mets Debut

Zack Wheeler, ranked seventh on MLB.com’s list of the top 100 prospects in baseball in 2013, made his highly anticipated Major League debut for the New York Mets on June 18. The highly touted 23-year-old right-hander did not disappoint, pitching six scoreless innings in a 6-1 Mets victory over the Atlanta Braves in the second half of a day-night doubleheader at Turner Field in Atlanta. The 6’4 power pitcher surrendered only four hits and struck out seven while showcasing the high-90s fastball that led him to be the sixth overall selection in the 2009 MLB Draft straight out of high school.

Those who had Mets tickets for the first game of the doubleheader saw a similarly dominant pitching performance, as early National League Cy Young candidate Matt Harvey improved his record to 6-1 as he led his team to a 4-3 victory, striking out 13 Braves batters in seven innings of three-hit baseball. Harvey’s 115 strikeouts are now tops in the NL, while his 2.16 ERA places him third in the league amongst starters.

Harvey Shines as Mets Ace

After a promising rookie campaign in 2012, 24-year-old pitcher Matt Harvey has exceeded expectations and stepped up to serve as the New York Mets’ key stopper this year. Harvey has raced out to a perfect 5-0 record through May 28, compiling an equally impressive 1.85 ERA—fifth best in the MLB—while amassing 9.69 strikeouts per nine innings, good for ninth in all of baseball. While opposing teams have struggled to score against Harvey, they have had a similarly difficult time producing against the man he hands the ball off to at the end of games: Bobby Parnell. Parnell has maintained a stellar 1.93 ERA while picking up four wins and eight saves.

On the offensive end, the load has been carried by the team’s reliable duo of lifelong Mets: Daniel Murphy and David Wright. Murphy has put up his usual impressive numbers, including a .304 batting average, while improving his power numbers with 16 doubles and four home runs on the young season. The Mets’ franchise player, Wright, has displayed his rare combination of power and speed by posting a robust .500 slugging percentage while stealing 11 bases. To witness this team’s talented nucleus of rising stars and established vets, visit the Vivid Seats marketplace and purchase Mets tickets to one of the many exciting upcoming games at Citi Field.

Wright Resigning Gives Hope to 2013 Mets

Though the offseason saw the Mets lose a star pitcher and Cy Young winner in R.A. Dickey, there was still great news to come out of Queens. The Mets resigned homegrown third baseman David Wright to an eight-year, $138 contract extension that will keep him in the Big Apple through 2025 and likely through the end of his career. The 30-year-old hit .306 with 21 home runs, 93 RBI, 91 runs, and 41 doubles last season en route to his sixth All-Star appearance. He already stands as the Mets’ all-time leader in hits, runs scored, walks, RBIs, doubles, and total bases. If he can amass 48 more home runs, he’ll pass Mike Piazza and Darryl Strawberry as the team’s all time leader there as well.

The Mets are hoping that Wright and fellow infielder Ike Davis can prove to be a dynamic duo once again. Last season, Davis only played for four months but he was still able to hit 32 home runs and drive in 90 runs. The 2013 Mets schedule has the squad playing opening day at Citi Field against the San Diego Padres on April 1st. Throughout the first month they will also invite the Miami Marlins, Washington Nationals, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Philadelphia Phillies to Citi Field. We’ve got a great assortment of 2013 New York Mets tickets, so get yours today and be there live to check out Wright and the crew.
