Gordon to Race in Final Daytona 500 of His Career
Set to retire at the conclusion of the 2015 NASCAR season, storied veteran Jeff Gordon will have the pole position when competition begins at his last-ever Daytona 500 on Feb. 22. Gordon has won the race on three previous occasions, though has not prevailed in a decade. Since then, the Daytona 500 has produced eight different winners, though the last three, Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Jimmie Johnson, and Matt Kenseth, were all repeat champs. If prior results have been any indication, Gordon will have a tall task at hand in 2015 as the last pole winner to triumph was Dale Jarrett back in 2000.
2007 victor Kevin Harvick will enter the 2015 Daytona 500 as the reigning Sprint Cup winner, as he held off Ryan Newman by a single point (5,043) to finish last year atop the standings. This year’s Daytona 500 qualifying featured knockout group sessions, which were implemented last season, but only just debuted at “The Great American Race” this year. The change in format has drawn mixed feelings from drivers, most notably those not in favor of its unpredictable nature.
