Originally, the Atlantic Coast Conference has been famous for its successful basketball program. The universities of the Atlantic Coast Conference have won ten NCAA championships. North Carolina became the winner of the NCAA four times: in 1957, 1982, 1993, and 2005; Duke became the holder of three NCAA champion titles: in 1991, 1992, and 2001; North Carolina State won twice, in 1974 and 1983, and Maryland became the best in 2002. Eight of the twelve teams participated in the Final Four at least one time.
