Originally members of the Southern Conference, the Gamecocks were displeased with said conference and became founding members of their own conference: the

Southeastern Conference in 2005. Without a doubt,
Clemson is the number one rival for the Gamecocks. Located only 125 miles apart, the schools have feuded since Clemson’s creation in 1889. But the origins of this feud are not only athletic. Originally, the two schools engaged in bitter disputes over their respective charters. Sports, basketball especially, have become the outlet for the bitter feud to be won or lost. The Gamecocks seemed to make enemies wherever they went. Went they joined/founded the ACC, they quickly struck feud with northern counterpart
