Men's Ice Hockey is considered as one of the most famous sports in United States of America. Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) is a branch of Ice Hockey that, specifically, targets young player and develop their interest into professional Ice Hockey. Its main region of operation is Midwestern and Western United States. It also takes part in NCAA's division.
The tournament was held, for the first time, in 1972. It was organized at St. Louis. It had three members in the beginning. However, in 1973, a fourth team (Western Michigan) was invited to participate in the tournament. In 1982, more teams were included in the tournament and the number was increased to eight. Four major colleges (Michigan, Michigan State, Michigan Tech and Notre Dame) joined CCHA. This gave CCHA the boost it was waiting for. The tournament gained immense popularity and many people turned their attention to CCHAs. In 1993, the CCHA club was complete when more members were made.
Currently, CCHA has 12 members. It has its headquarters located in Michigan. Every member has its own home arena. All of the CCHA members are allowed to participate in the first round of the tournament. After first round and quarterfinals, four teams are selected. These four teams play semi-finals and the winning teams from the two semi-finals, play the championship game. The tournament Championship is held at Joe Louis Arena, Detroit. The winner of the tournament receives the Mason Cup. Tournament is held, usually, in the second week of March. The tournament format has been altered a number of times. There is no women division in CCHA. Michigan State has made the most championship appearances. Notre Dame won the tournament in 2007, while, Michigan State was crowned the National Champions. Michigan State Spartans have been crowned champions, a remarkable 11 times (the most by any member).
