Set on a bare stage of a Broadway theatre during an audition for the chorus line of a musical, the show is about the life events that have shaped the dancers- those you cant normally tell apart from one another. The show was based on taped workshop rehearsals with the dancers with eight dancers appearing in the first cast.
In 1975, A Chorus Line opened at The Public Theater. Word of mouth caused the show to sell out immediately. Due to overwhelming ticket demand, the show was moved uptown to the bigger Schubert Theatre where it ran for 6, 137 performances. It was the longest running Broadway show in history until Cats broke that record in 1997.
The show was directed by Michael Bennett and co-choreographed with Bob Avian. The show received 12 Tony Award nominations, winning nine including Best Musical. In 1976, the show won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the New York Drama Critic’s Circle Award for Best Play of the season. The show went on tour becoming successful in London’s West End as well. The show was revived in 2006 and will run through the fall of 2008.
