The Drowsy Chaperone News

The Drowsy Chaperone Background Information

The show started in 1999 as a spoof of old musicals written by McKellar, Mambert and Morrison for their theatre friends (Bob Martin and Janet Van de Graaff) stag party before their wedding. The original versions contained more risqué jokes, no Man in Chair, and the music styles ranged from the 1920’s to the 1940’s. The creators decided to enter the show in the Toronto Fringe Festival and Martin hopped on board as co-writer. After the festival, David Mirvish produced an expanded production at the Theatre Passe Muraille. Great reviews led him to do another show at the Winter Garden Theatre in Toronto in 2001. New York producer Roy Miller saw the show and obtained the rights. The Drowsy Chaperone had its first run on Broadway after an out of town run in Los Angeles in 2006. The show is currently touring North America with plans to tour in Japan and Australia.
