Billy Elliot the Musical is based on the movie of the same name that hit theatres in 2000. Elton John wrote music for the show. The book and lyrics were written by the movie’s screenwriter, Lee Hall. The screenplay was initially inspired by the A.J. Cronin novel, The Stars Look Down. The show opened in London’s West End in 2005. The musical won four out of the nine nominated Lawrence Olivier Awards including Best New Musical. Due to the success of the show, productions have been started in Australia. The show is scheduled to open in October of 2008 on Broadway with the production running through 2009 at the Imperial Theatre. London’s creative team was maintained to direct and design the show. The role of Billy Elliot is set to rotate amongst three young actors: David Alvarez, Kiril Kulish and Trent Kowalik.
