Tarzan History

Brought to you by Disney on Broadway, Tarzan is based on the 1999 Disney animated film. The story was first written by Edgar Rice Burroughs in 1914. It tells the tale of an orphaned boy raised in the jungle by apes. He eventually chooses to go into the world of the civilized only to ultimately reject it for the jungle.
Phil Collins composed the music (you might remember the song he wrote for the movie version, “You’ll Be In My Heart”) and David Henry Hwang wrote the book. Bob Crowley directed the show and the swinging jungle aerial movement that makes Tarzan so special was directed by Pinchon Baldinu.
Tarzan the Musical began its run on Broadway at the Richard Rodgers Theatre in 2006. This show was the only Disney Theatrical production without an out of town trial. The show has since performed internationally with shows in The Netherlands, Sweden and Germany. There are also shows in Asia scheduled for Japan, China and Korea.
In January 2009, the show will re-open on tour in the United States with the first stop planned for Atlanta at the Theater of the Stars. This time the direction of the show will be left to Lynne Taylor-Corbett and aerial design by Paul Rubin. The Tarzan tour will then move on to California, North Carolina, and Texas.
