Right on schedule, Eric Clapton has once again assembled some of the best guitar players in the world for the 2013 edition of the Crossroads Guitar Festival. Held every three years since 2004, the must-see concert event boasts all-time legends and current superstars alike; who this year will gather in New York to display their world-class guitar skills in front of a capacity crowd at the famed Madison Square Garden for the first time ever. Previous editions of the festival had been held solely at outdoor venues such as the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas (2004), and Toyota Park in Bridgeview, Ill. (2007, 2010).
This year’s event will take place over two nights, April 12-13, marking the first multi-day affair since the inaugural festival in 2004. As always, the list of guitar gods slated to descend upon New York’s premier concert venue is overloaded with top talent, as some notable performers scheduled to play alongside Clapton include B.B. King, Jeff Beck, John Mayer, Vince Gill, Buddy Guy, Brad Paisley, Johnny Lang, Robert Randolph, and Keith Urban, just to name a few.
The stacked Crossroads Guitar Festival lineup offers up extraordinary guitar solos, duets, and collaborations best experienced live. Here are some memorable moments from past festivals:
2004 -- Cotton Bowl
During his performance of “I’m the Hell Outta Here,” guitarist Steve Vai shredded some incredible solos for fans at the inaugural festival.
2007 -- Toyota Park
At the 2007 event, fans were treated to this unforgettable rendition of Steve Winwood’s 1969 hit song, “Can’t Find My Way Home.” This performance included guitar legends Winwood, Clapton, Derek Trucks, and Doyle Bramhall II.
2010 -- Toyota Park
Eric Clapton performed Bob Marley’s timeless classic, “I Shot the Sheriff,” to a sold-out crowd in 2010. A cover version of the song was included on Clapton’s 1974 album, “461 Ocean Boulevard.”
The Crossroads Guitar Festival will be the final stop on the U.S. leg of Clapton’s 2013 world tour, which launched in mid-March and will continue on into the summer. The trek is in support of his 21st and latest album, “Old Sock,” which features a collection of 10 re-polished tracks and two new tunes from the GRAMMY winner.
