Genesis is a very famous rock band. It originates from Godalming, Surrey, England, and was formed in 1967. The main genres are progressive rock and pop rock. The world-known band members Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins have also achieved much success as solo artists. In all, the band sold more than 150 million albums, and thus they are in the list of the top Thirty Highest Selling Artists.
During their musical history Genesis collaborated with different recording companies, like the Decca Records, the Charisma Records, the ABC Records, the Atco Records, the Atlantic Records, and the Rhino Entertainment.
The present members of the band are Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford, and Tony Banks. Among the notable former members are Peter Gabriel, Steve Hackett, John Mayhew, Anthony Phillips, John Silver, Chris Stewart, and Ray Wilson.
During their long artistic history, the band has experienced many personnel changes. In 1975 Peter Gabriel decided to leave the band, so Phil Collins became the groups frontman. But in 1996 Collins himself declared his departure. For the 1997 album, which was called Calling All Stations he was replaced by Ray Wilson, a former Stiltskin member. But the album failed commercially, and the band announced their break up.
During the following nine years (since 1997 till 2006) there were continuous rumors that the band was reuniting, but they never came true. Only in the fall of 2006, Peter Gabriel stated that the band had started the rehearsals (Tony Banks, Phil Collins, and Miki Rutherford). Lately, in October 2006, it was officially announced on the BBC (the British Broadcasting Corporation). In fact, they agreed to make a world tour together and were considering some new material to record. The tour will be called Turn It On Again and will start on the 7th of November. The concerts will be held in twelve countries. The first European concert will take place in Helsinki (the capital of Finland) in June 2007, and the last one in Rome in July. Then the band will move to the United States to make shows for the American fans. The tour program will include only the most famous and most notable compositions the band has created during their long, almost 40-year history.
In all, the band recorded twenty official albums, the most popular of which were Foxtrot (October, 1972), Genesis Live (August, 1973), The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway (November, 1974), Seconds Out (October, 1977), And Then There Were Three (April, 1978), Abacab (September, 1981), Genesis (October, 1983), Invisible Touch (June, 1986), We Cant Dance (November, 1991), Live/The Way We Walk, Volume Two: The Longs (January, 1993). The band also made four compilations (in 1992, 1998, 1999, and 2004). Genesis recorded thirty-six singles.
