The Sugar Bowl is an American college football game held every year in New Orleans, Louisiana. It is usually played on the first of January. This bowl was one of the first that joined the Bowl Championship Series. In 2004 the Sugar Bowl became the host of the BCS championship game. Starting from 2007 these games will be held separately from the bowl games, a week after the New Years Day.

The Sugar Bowl Stadium (the Tulane Stadium) was the home to the game since 1935 till 1974. Since 1975 the Louisiana Superdome (or simply the Superdome, or the Dome) hosts the matches. It is a very large sports facility, which is situated in New Orleans, Louisiana. It is located on fifty-two acres, which is 210 thousand square meters. It was damaged by the strong winds of the Katrina Hurricane. People who didnt get the possibility to get out of town used the Dome as their last resort. After the hurricane the Louisiana Superdome was refurbished to host the Sugar Bowl games anew. In 2006 the game was played at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.

Before the BCS, the participants of the Sugar Bowl were the champion of the Southeastern Conference and the top-tier opponent. After the Bowl ceased to host the BCS title games, it has the option to select the team.

The Sugar Bowl has its Hall of Fame. The award recipients are usually those people who made some notable achievements and contributed a lot to the Sugar Bowl history. Here are some most prominent award holders: Jim Bullinger (baseball), Milt Clavier (coach), Reggie Dupard (football), James King (basketball), Augie Schmidt (baseball), and others.

The Manning Award is the only quarterback award. It is given to the best quarterback, taking into consideration his bowl performances. The 2005 winner became Vince Young (the University of Texas), in 2004 Matt Leinart (the University of Southern California) received the award.

Originally, the Sugar Bowls sponsor was the USF&G Financial Services (from 1987 to 1995), later, Nokia cellular telephones of Finland (from 1995 to 2006). In March of 2006 the new sponsor became the Allstate Insurance Company.

The Sugar Bowl keeps on sponsoring sports events of the Louisiana High School Athletic Associations Division I and III. Firstly, ABC Sports channel broadcast the game, but starting in 2007 it will be televised by FOX Sports. At present the participating teams of the Sugar Bowl are paid from fourteen up to seventeen million US dollars.
