The Emerald Bowl is the name of a post-season college football bowl game. It is certified by the
NCAA, and since 2002 it has taken place at 40,800-seat AT&T Park in San Francisco, California
each year. By the way, AT&T park is considered to be the home of the San Francisco Giants. The
previous name of the Emerald Bowl was the San Francisco Bowl and its official name sounded like the
Diamond Walnut San Francisco Bowl. The name was devoted to the corporate title sponsor, Diamond of
California. At present one knows the company as Diamond Foods, Inc. and Emerald of California is
now treated as its primary snack nut brand. Moreover, it is still the title sponsor. The teams
playing the game are usually from the ACC and Pac-10 conferences.
As far as the history of the Emerald Bowl is concerned, in the year 2002 Virginia Tech managed
to become the champion. Bryan Randall-Virginia Tech was called the Outstanding Offensive Player of
the Game. In 2003 Boston College excelled all the rivals. The outstanding Offensive Player of the
Game was certainly Derrick Knight and the Outstanding Defensive Player of the Game was T.J.
Stancil, both from Boston College. In the year 2004 Navy contrived to be the first with Aaron
Polanco called the Outstanding Offensive Player of the Game and Vaughn Kelly called the Outstanding
Defensive Player of the Game. Actually that was the year when the bowl produced what later would be
called a record-setting drive. What Navy did in the third quarter, was actually that it managed to
force New Mexico into a three-and-out and in this way culminated a goal-line stand. The Midshipmen
immediately responded to this and performed a drive with 26 plays, 94 yards, and 14 minutes and 26
seconds that stretched well into the next quarter. After a certain period of time the drive would
be called historic by the NCAA. less
