Before the BCS, the participants of the Sugar Bowl were the champion of the Southeastern Conference and the top-tier opponent. After the Bowl ceased to host the BCS title games, it has the option to select the team.

The Manning Award is the only quarterback award. It is given to the best quarterback, taking into consideration his bowl performances. The 2005 winner became Vince Young (the University of Texas), in 2004 Matt Leinart (the University of Southern California) received the award.
Originally, the Sugar Bowls sponsor was the USF&G Financial Services (from 1987 to 1995), later, Nokia cellular telephones of Finland (from 1995 to 2006). In March of 2006 the new sponsor became the Allstate Insurance Company.
The Sugar Bowl keeps on sponsoring sports events of the Louisiana High School Athletic Associations Division I and III. Firstly, ABC Sports channel broadcast the game, but starting in 2007 it will be televised by FOX Sports. At present the participating teams of the Sugar Bowl are paid from fourteen up to seventeen million US dollars.
