The Sun Bowl (also the Brut Sun Bowl) is a college football game, which is played every year at
the end of December in El Paso, Texas. The first game was played on the first of January 1935, and
thus it is one of the oldest Bowl games. In the early years of the bowl the participants were the
Border Conference (NCAA-affiliated college athletic conference) champion and at-large opponent. The
first three games were hosted at the El Paso High School Stadium, and later at the Kidd Field. At
present the matches are played at the Sun Bowl Stadium (since 1963), which is the home to the UTEP
Miners football team.
The university granted the land where the stadium is situated, to El Paso,
who lately built the stadium for the college and for the Sun Bowl matches.
Originally, the Sun Bowl was a fund-raising event for one of the local clubs. The main purpose
was the benefit of unprivileged children and the financing of the El Paso High School Stadium. In
1934 on one of the club meetings it was decided to sponsor a football match on New Years Day. The
idea was accepted unanimously. The name was created by the Dr.C.M. Hendricks, who lately became the
1st Sun Bowl association president. Beginning from the following year the Sun Bowl became a college
game. During many years a lot of university stars have participated in the Sun Bowl.
The present sponsor is the Brut (which is a range of perfumed grooming products) owned by the
Helen of Troy Ltd. The Bowl changed its name only in August, 2006, and will have it at least till
2009, as the Helen of Troy extended its contract. It is already the 8th name of the Sun Bowl. Once
it was simply the Sun Bowl, then John Hankock Sun Bowl, John Hancock Bowl, Norwest Sun Bowl, Wells
Fargo Sun Bowl, Vitalis Sun Bowl.
Since 1968 the Sun Bowl is televised by the CBS (Columbia Broadcasting System).
The first participants of the Sun Bowl were the El Paso All-Stars and the Ranger (texas). In
2005 the UCLA (the University of California, Los Angeles) won over the Northwestern (50-38). On the
29th of December 2006 will be held the next Sun Bowl. The participants will be the Pacific 10
Conference number 3 and the Big 12 or Big East Conference team.
Among the most valuable players who distinguished themselves by their illustrious football
