2014 Sun Bowl: Arizona State vs Duke
Many notable storylines surround the 2014 Sun Bowl, which will return to El Paso on Dec. 27 featuring a first-time matchup between Duke and Arizona State. Both squads finished the year with nine wins apiece, though the Sun Devils’ stacked schedule and tally of wins over nationally ranked foes like USC, Stanford, and Utah has helped keep the program in the top 25. ASU has become a perennial postseason contender in recent years, though has won just three bowl games since 2004. The program has competed in the Sun Bowl on four previous occasions, winning a pair against the Big Ten’s Iowa and Purdue. Against ACC squads, the Sun Devils are 7-10 all-time.
The Blue Devils, meanwhile, earned a third straight bowl game bid for the first time in school history. Prior to the 2012 season, Duke had not qualified for the postseason since 1995, but has since found success on the gridiron. In addition to serving as their Sun Bowl game debut, this year’s contest also will give the Blue Devils a chance to secure the school’s first postseason win since 1961.
