Theater producer Cameron Mackintosh met Pamela Travers, author of the Mary Poppins books, in 1993. He received the rights to develop a play adaptation. In 2001 he met with the head of Disney Theatrical to discuss the possible collaboration. In collaborating with Disney, Makintosh could then use the songs from the Disney movie in the stage version. In 2002, development between the two parties began. Because of “his clear understanding of the social niceties of the English class system that prevailed in the Edwardian era,” Julian Fellowes (Academy Award winner for his screenplay, Gosford Park) was hired to write the script. In 2003 at London’s Old Vic Theatre, a workshop was held using the cast of My Fair Lady. In 2004, an out of town tryout debuted at the Bristol Hippodrome before moving on to success at London’s West End. In 2006, Mary Poppins appeared on Broadway and continues to tour today. The show is scheduled to run in Chicago, New York and St. Louis through 2009.
