The Pirate Queen is a well-known musical, praising the Irish Chieftain Grace Grania OMalley. The plot of the play is based on a real story. The musical tells about Grania, an Irish patriot, mother, lover, sailor, and pirate, who is a character from the national Irish folklore. She met English Queen Elizabeth I, having led the Irish rebels against the British ones. Generally, the play presents a typical Irish motif. The show is brightened with lively national Irish step dancing and Celtic musical compositions and songs, which create a totally new type of musical, combining the element of a historical romance and a timeless saga.
The story takes place in Clew Bay, which lies in the west of Ireland, in 1588. We witness the launch of Clan OMalleys new ship with the captain Chieftain Dubhdara OMalley. Women at that time were symbols of bad luck on board the ship, therefore the main hero Grania (Stephanie J. Block), Dubhdaras daughter, conceals herself, acting and dressing like a boy in order to become a member of the crew. Tiernan (Hadley Fraser), a friend of Grania, helps her to hide from the crew. As soon as a storm hits the ship, Grania bravely shows her strong temper and earns the respect of the crewmembers. Little by little Tiernan and Grania fall in love, while pirating the seas and wreaking the British vessels.
In England, Queen Elizabeth I (Linda Balgord) and her minister Lord Richard Bingham (William Youmans) find out about Granias deeds and decide to defeat her. She makes the order to find and subdue Grace OMalley. At this time, Ireland is in confusion, while the opposing Irish clans have to unite to prevent the English invasion. Therefore Grania is asked by her father to marry Donal OFlaherty (Marcus Chait) so that the two clans could unite. Grania decides to be loyal to her father and the Irish interests, and agrees. However, she is deeply in love with Tiernan, who is frustrated but stays loyal to the cause.
Gradually, we see Grania become the chief captain after having left her husband according to the Irish Brehon Law tradition. Tiernan sacrifices his life in order to rescue Grania, when the English get control over Ireland. Grania becomes a respectable leader who wins the credibility of the English Queen.
